About Secure Communities Initiative
Our Story
The Secure Communities Initiative (SCI) is dedicated to reducing firearms related deaths through proactive intervention, community engagement, and strategic partnerships. To achieve our goals and expand our impact, SCI seeks grant funding and donations to support our initiatives and operations.
Our Programs
- Surrender Estate Firearms: Implement service to obtain firearms through collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and local residents to obtain and dispose of unwanted firearms so they don't end up on the black market or in the hands of criminals.
- Promote Awareness: Raise public awareness about firearm safety and the legal transfer of firearms to individuals that must pass a mandated background check. Also promote awareness of our safe storage program for individuals in crisis through law enforcement and mental health care providers.
- Provide Resources: Offer resources and support to individuals seeking to surrender firearms or have them temporarily removed from their residence while a crisis is taking place in their life, also including access to counseling, safe storage training, and social services.
- Buy-Back Initiatives: Establish firearm buy-back programs to incentivize individuals to voluntarily surrender firearms, reducing their illegal circulation and preventing potential misuse.
- Suicide Prevention: Provide safe storage options for individuals contemplating suicide, addressing the alarming statistic that 75% of gun violence in Washington State is attributed to suicide. By offering an offsite secure firearm storage service, we aim to prevent impulsive access to firearms during moments of crisis.
- Firearms Safe Storage for Drug and Domestic Violence Situations: Implement measures to provide offsite safe storage options for firearms in households affected by drug-related activities and domestic violence situations. Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, domestic violence shelters, and substance abuse treatment centers.
- Firearms Surrender Program: We will pick up and properly dispose of any and all firearms you wish to dispose of. We will provide you a receipt of surrender and a record of the transaction.
Our Impact
Communities across the nation are plagued by the loss of life from firearms. SCI recognizes the urgent need to address this issue comprehensively, employing a multi-faceted approach to promote community safety and well-being. Removing unwanted firearms from circulation through our firearms surrender program will reduce deaths in our state.
